Choose a Theme for Your Party

It is much easier to decorate for your holiday party if you have some type of theme for your party.

Your theme can be based on an activity your party is centered around such as a sliding party, or carolling. Or it can be as simple as a loose theme such as winter wonderland or Silver and gold.

To save money, try basing your theme around decorations you already have, using them in different ways.

For example, if you collect snow globes then why not do a Snow Globe Christmas Theme. Have a large Santa Collection? Then why not go with a Secret Santa Theme.

Having a theme for your party will help you come up with a look for your overall décor as well as make it easier to coordinate your decorations from room to room.

Your theme doesn’t have to be the main part of your decorations. You can just use theme based objects like the ones below to put the final touch on everything.

Decking the Halls

When decorating your home for a holiday party, you are going to want to go all out and really create a beautiful and magical look that guests will enjoy and feel excited about.

Focus on the rooms where the main part of your party will take place (Normally the living room and dining room). But don’t neglect any of the rooms in the main part of your home including the kitchen and the bathroom.

Start by using lots of those decorating items that have a real Christmas feeling, such as plenty of Christmas lights, candles and greenery, then add your themed items to these holiday staples.

For example, if your theme is winter wonderland, then place a green garland on your mantle (If you have a fireplace) set out red candles in holders and add a couple of crystal angels, reindeer, or other objects to give the feeling of ice sculptures.

No fireplace? No problem. Hang green lighted garlands from your windows. You can add poinsettias or even roses to your garland and then hang snowflakes and icicles so they hang down over your windows.

Place Christmas lights around your doorways, add a touch of greenery with snowflakes or icicles.

Arrange white ornaments or textured white styrofoam balls in a dish, add a few silver glittery twigs and set on your coffee table. Make sure your tree echoes your theme décor as well.

Of course, for different themes, you will want to go with different decorations, but blend those decorations in with your greenery and lights and add candles wherever you can. (LED candles should be used whenever possible for safety purposes.)

Your dining room and living room decorations should seamlessly flow into each other since this is mainly where the guests will gather.

Keep your theme when decorating your dinner or food table as well. You can easily do this with the centerpiece you choose as well as the table linens.

With lights in the doorway, and on the ceiling along with hanging ceiling decorations, enjoying the food provided will seem much more festive.
