Can You Use Fabuloso in Laundry?

We have all grown accustomed to the refreshing lavender aromas of Fabuloso. Still, I started to question, can you use Fabuloso in laundry?

I fondly remember Sunday afternoons. The house filled with the comforting hum of the laundry machine. And the sweet scent of cleanliness wafted through the air.

Fabuloso is a multi-purpose cleaner formulated to degrease and clean dirt and grime from hard surfaces. Its antibacterial formula is ideal for wiping down counters, floors, bathrooms, and furniture. It even works well on sealed wooden surfaces. However, there is a limit to its applications.

I was intrigued by the idea of infusing my laundry with the long-lasting, refreshing aromas that we all know Fabuloso is for. So I embarked on a simple journey of discovery about using their product in my laundry.

I soon learned the subtle lessons of why you should not use it when washing your clothes.

Understanding Fabuloso

Fabuloso is a common everyday cleaner. It has become a household staple. And people know it for its bright colors and captivating scents.

Its primary purpose is as an antibacterial multi-function cleaner used around the house for cleaning kitchen counters and stove tops, refreshing bathroom spaces, wiping down walls, and mopping floors.

It’s made to tackle grimy surfaces. It’s not for laundry, no matter how nice it smells. To properly understand Fabuloso, you need to understand the ingredients.

Their products contain surfactants, fragrances, and dyes, which help remove dirt, grime, and stains and give them a pleasant scent and bright colors.

Small amounts of ethanol are also present, which helps dissolve grease and oil.

Some products contain sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). These ingredients can cause skin irritations and allergic reactions.

There are also products that contain ingredients like quaternary ammonia compounds (QAC). They are classified as skin and lung irritants.

Why You Should Not Use Fabuloso in Laundry

Different types of Fabuloso.

Now I know that Fabuloso has a wonderful fragrance and ability to remove tough grime and dirt, but learn from my journey. Don’t use it in your laundry. There are risks and downsides to using it this way.

A consumer report expert, Richard Handel, says, “We generally warn against using anything not designed for washing machines”.

One of the primary concerns I found is the potential residue left on my clothes.

I find that its ingredients do not rinse out as effectively from fabrics as traditional laundry detergents do, which could lead to issues like discoloration or damage to clothing fibers, compromising the overall quality of your garments.

Moreover, the ingredients in Fabuloso may not be skin-friendly. When in direct contact with the skin, the residue on the clothes, especially for sensitive skin, could result in irritation or allergic reactions.

Another reason is that Fabuloso does not recommend heating their products. Some machine cycles heat water for specific wash cycles. This may deteriorate the formula’s integrity, leading to quality and safety issues.

You should use products as the manufacturers direct. This is vital for safety and to benefit from the product’s intended purposes.

Manufacturers invest a considerable amount of time and resources in formulating the products for specific purposes.

There are several reasons for using a product for its intended purpose.

  • Safety – Products are made with selected ingredients to perform their functions while minimizing potential risks.
  • Effectiveness – Each product is formulated to deliver maximum efficacy within its intended application. Straying from recommended usage might result in suboptimal performance or even failure to achieve the desired outcome.
  • Environmental impact – Proper application and disposal guidelines help minimize the environmental impact of certain products.
  • Preservation of quality – Using a product outside its intended scope may lead to degradation, inefficiency, or damage.

The Importance of Using Proper Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergents.

Laundry detergents undergo rigorous testing to ensure they are safe for use on fabrics that come in contact with the skin. And deviating from these tested products might pose unnecessary risks.

Still, in the end, it’s all about preserving the integrity of the fabric and the washing machine the detergent interacts with.

When it comes to washing your laundry, using the proper detergent is crucial for several reasons.

#1. Fabric Compatibility

The ingredients clean the garments without harming their structure. They ensure that clothes keep their color and texture over time.

#2. Stain Removal

Laundry detergents contain enzymes and surfactants targeting specific types of stains, such as grease, dirt, or food.

The precise combination of these ingredients helps to lift and remove stains. These ingredients work by suspending the stains in the water instead of redepositing them on your clothes.

#3. Water Interaction

Detergents are made to work well with water. They spread evenly and don’t leave residue on clothes. Residue can irritate skin.

#4. Compatibility with Washing Machines

Manufacturers make laundry detergents to work with various types of machines. They make the right amount of suds for cleaning but don’t foam too much. They also prevent build-up and extend your machine’s life.

#5. Fabric Softening and Color Protection

An additional benefit is the added fabric softeners or color protectors. These are essential for maintaining the softness of fabrics and preventing colors from fading.

Alternatives to Using Fabuloso in Laundry

Choosing an alternative to Fabuloso in your laundry ensures you use products tested for compatibility and effectiveness.

Personally, I prefer using liquid versus powder detergents for their ease of application. And they are more effective in high-efficiency (HE) machines, dissolving better and leaving less residue.

Some of my favorites are:

  • Tide PODS – It is a trusted laundry detergent brand. It is well-known for its effective stain removal and cleaning. The pods are measured and easy to use.
  • Gain – This detergent offers many powerful, effective ways to remove stains. It is twice as strong as baking soda. It also comes in many fragrances to suit your preferences.
  • Meyer’s Clean Day – I love this one as it’s cruelty-free, biodegradable, and gentle on my clothes.

Tips for Using Laundry Boosters or Fabric Softeners

Laundry boosters and fabric softeners are not the same. But you can use them together to get the best results of soft, static-free garments that radiate fresh fragrances for weeks.

  • Add fabric softeners to the softener draw and not directly in the drum.
  • I dilute my fabric softener with a bit of water to prevent product build-up on the clothes.
  • Only use softener on certain items that would benefit from softening. Or are prone to static build-up, such as bed linen, wool, and casual clothing.
  • Be careful not to overuse fabric softeners, as they can impact the fabric’s absorbency, such as towels.
  • Add laundry boosters directly into the drum before adding laundry.
  • Don’t add boosters to dryers, as this may cause a fire. They react and dissolve with water, not heat.

What Should I do if I’ve Already Used Fabuloso in My Laundry?

Using Fabuloso in your laundry once may not be catastrophic. But it may be a good idea to rewash your laundry with a laundry detergent specific for laundry. As for your washing machine, make sure it’s empty and rinse it with hot water and a cup of vinegar to strip the residue.

Can the Use of Fabuloso in Laundry Damage My Washing Machine?

Yes, it can in the long run. However, using Fabuloso occasionally in the laundry is unlikely to cause severe damage to your washing machine. Using it for long periods can cause residue build-up. And that can have potential corrosive effects due to exposure to chemicals.

Are there Any Circumstances Where a Small Amount of Fabuloso is Safe in Laundry?

No, even small amounts used over an extended period can cause build-up on the clothes, causing skin irritations. Exposure to chemicals not designed for that purpose will damage your machine.

Final Thoughts

It’s essential to recognize the limitations of Fabuloso when it comes to laundry use. Understand that its formula is for hard surfaces rather than fabrics.

Following the manufacturer’s guidelines and instructions ensures you use the product correctly. This will help to preserve the integrity and longevity of fabrics and your washing machine.

Take it from someone who has gone down this road. It is better to stick to reputable laundry-specific products, paying a little attention to the instructions for a safe laundry experience.
