Prepare your bathroom tile grout for cleaning. While you could certainly dive right in with your steam mop and clean the floor at the same time your steam mop will be much more effective in cleaning your tile grout if you clean the floor first.

Step 1: Sweep the Bathroom Floor

Sweep with a stiff broom paying attention to the grout lines to ensure that they are clear of loose debris and digging out any chunks of dirt or other items that may be embedded in the bathroom grout lines.

Step 2: Mop the Floor

Give your bathroom floor a quick mop to remove excess dirt.

Step 3: First Run

Steam cleaning your bathroom tile grout may take a few runs over the surface to get it done well. Do your first run moving slowly following the lines in the grout with your steam cleaner.

Step 4: Wipe Up Dirt with a Clean Towel

Follow closely behind with a clean towel to wipe up any dirt removed before it can dry back onto the surface. This pass-over may leave your grout looking blotchy and uneven. This is normal as dirt does not stick evenly to the grout in your home.

Step 5: Treat with Peroxide

After your first pass, take a moment to put peroxide along the areas that have stuck on dirt or did not respond well to steaming the first time. Let this sit for about 5 minutes before starting the steaming process all over again.

Step 6: Second Run

Follow along the grout lines pausing to give the steam time to work in areas that needed treatment to help work the dirt and grime out. Letting the steam sip into the dirt is a great way to break up even the most set-in stains.

Step 7: Repeat Peroxide Treatment if Needed

Follow along behind again with a clean cloth. Repeat peroxide treatment and steaming again if needed.

How to Steam Clean Tile Grout in Shower Walls

Step 1:  Clean the Walls

Clean your shower wall before you begin. Soap scum can trap dust and dirt in your shower grout leaving it dingy and dirty looking.

Step 2: Steam Clean the Walls

Once your shower walls are clean you can begin steaming the shower tile grout. To do this start from the top and work your way down following the grout lines. This will allow the melted soap scum and grime to roll down the walls of your shower and be washed away as you work your way down.

Step 3: Rinse Well

Rinse well and often as you work your way across your shower walls to prevent grime from drying back onto your tiles.

What to Do if Steam Cleaning is Not Enough for Your Tile Grout

While many people have great results with using a steam cleaner on tile grout, for older tile that may not have had very good care over the years, you may need a bit more elbow grease than your steam cleaner can muster.

A great way to really get your grout clean is to loosen the dirt with your steam cleaner and follow behind with a drill scrub brush attachment that can power through tough dirt and grime the steamer loosens.

How to Keep Bathroom Tile Grout Clean

A clean bathroom

After you have gotten your grout nice and clean you may be wondering what you can do to keep it that way.

Seal It

The best thing you can do for keeping your grout clean and looking great is to seal it. When you seal your grout you create a barrier between the grainy surface and the dirt that is tracked through your home. This keeps the dirt from getting stuck in the grout so it can stay looking great.

Clean Your Floors on a Regular Basis

Clean your floors on a regular basis. Even if your floors don’t look like they need to be cleaned, a regular dust mop at a minimum can help prevent dust and dirt from getting stuck in your tile grout.

Keep It Dry

When mopping your floor make a point to dry it well and quickly to avoid dust and dirt falling on the floor and drying.

Use Mats

Use mats at the entrances of your home to catch dirt tracked in on shoes and pet feet to help keep your tile floors cleaner longer. This is a great way to reduce dust and dirt in your home so you can clean less often.

Clean Shower Walls after Shower

For keeping tile grout in your shower clean, spray down your shower walls with shower cleaner or a bottle of vinegar after your shower to prevent soap scum build-up that leads to trapped dirt and grime in your shower tile grout.

I've never used a hand held steam cleaner before, but now I'm tempted to get one because my tile and grout get filthy so quick...especially with little kids and dogs running around my house. I typically just get a tile cleaning from a local company a few times a year so I don't have to do the work myself.
