Clothes Closet Organization Hacks

All too often our clothes closet becomes stuffed with clothing and it is not unusual to find sloppily hung up clothes on the floor of the closet or be unable to find a certain belt, scarf, or even pair of jeans.

You want to organize your closet so that every article of clothing, every accessory, and every pair of shoes will be simple and easy to find.

So, let’s start organizing your clothes closet.

#1. Start by Emptying that Closet

Clothes closet organization

In order to organize your closet, you need to first empty out your closet.

This not only means removing everything from your closet and sorting them into categories, but it also means that you need to purge your closet of some of those clothes, accessories and shoes that you rarely wear.

Once you have cleared your closet of everything and dusted down the walls, shelves and floor, you are ready to start organizing.

Keep in mind that which hacks you use for your organization will depend on your own needs and whether or not the closet belongs to an adult or older child or a small toddler.

It may also depend on whether you have mostly separates or a lot of longer clothing such as dresses or evening gowns.

#2. Make the Most of Your Shelf Space

Most closets are built with one or two shelves above the clothing rod. You can make the most of that shelf space by using dividers (either purchased or DIY) to make little cubbies to help organize various items.

You can then use some of these cubbies to store such items as tee shirts, shorts, and even folded jeans and accessories while keeping them neat and tidy.

#3. Create Your Own Extra Clothing Rod

If you have more separates than dresses then you can create an extra clothing rod that hangs below the built-in clothing rod to help you better separate and organize your clothing.

You can run the rod the entire length of your closet, or just a portion by making your own rod using a dowel and rope and attaching it to the upper rod or the top of the closet.

To better keep those hanging clothes on a hanger you can make your own no-slip hangers simply by taking some pipe cleaners (you can buy them from the dollar store or online) and wrapping them around the top of the hanger (below the hook) right before the hanger starts to curve.

The fuzzy pipe cleaners will tend to cling slightly to your clothing stopping them from sliding off the hanger.

#4. Self Hanging Closet Organizer

If you have a small closet or limited storage space, you can add more storage and maximize the available space with one of these space saving self hanging closet organizers.

#7. Make Use of the Dead Space in Your Closet

Normally there are dead spaces on the sides of your closet, that can be made use of when organizing your closet.

You can hang a sturdy pegboard like this one with pegs to hang ties or other small items. I really like this pegboard because it is made with galvanized steel, making it strong enough to hold up pretty good.

You can also hang a couple of hooks on the opposite side to hang up those bathrobes or nightgowns.

#8. Make Use of the Inside of Your Closet Door

If you have a closet door that swings open instead of slides you can make use of the inside of that closet door by hanging a shoe organizer to get those shoes off the floor and keep them neatly together.

If you have space to put a small double shelf on the floor of your closet to hold your shoes, or you can use a revolving shoe rack like this one. You can then use the hanging shoe organizer to keep small items neatly organized.

#9. Closet Purse Organizers

Use purse organizers to neatly organize your handbags and hang at one end of the closet.

#10. Easy Organization Hack For Toddlers Closets

Toddlers’ clothes take up much less space on a hanger than older children’s and adults clothing too.

So you can use that extra space in your toddlers’ closet to build some spacious cubby holes in which to keep their shoes, toys, favorite books and even dolls helping to keep their room organized and neat as well as their closet.

Linen Closet Organization Ideas

If your home has a dedicated Linen closet, then you know that trying to organize your linen closet is a lot different than organizing your bedroom closet.

However, getting your linens organized doesn’t have to be difficult or frustrating. You just need to take a bit of time to get everything set up.

#11. Start by Sorting

If you are like most people, you have some paper-thin sheets that you never use, but keep in case of an emergency.

Likewise, you also have some threadbare towels and even some slightly stained table linens that you keep thinking you might need someday.

It’s time to get rid of those unused and unneeded items and streamline the contents of your linen closet.

  • Sheets – You only need about 3 sets of sheets for each bed and 2 sets for your guest room if you have one. Any more than that and you won’t really be using them and they will just be taking up needed space in your linen closet.
  • Towels – Some experts also suggest just 3 sets of towels per person in your household, one to use, one in the wash and one ready to use. However, I know that I don’t do laundry every day and I use two towels per shower one for my hair and one for my body, so I suggest you decide how many towels you really need for the size of your family and how they use them. (You may also find these towel storage solutions for small bathrooms helpful.)
  • Table linens – Most people have a couple of tablecloths for daily use, a good tablecloth for holidays and special occasions and maybe a few sets of placemats with napkins. Anymore than that then you probably are not using them all.
  • Blankets – two or three extra blankets should be all the extra blankets most people need.

#12. Sort Your Sheet Sets According to Size

Sort your sheets according to size such as King, Queen, twin etc. Keep the pillow cases with the set of sheets by placing the folded pillow cases inside the last fold of the top sheet.

You can do the same with your towel sets, folding the hand towels and wash clothes inside the bath towel. The same can be done with tablecloths and napkin sets.

#13. Turn Some of those Linen Closet Shelves into Cubbies

By using or making shelf divides you can turn some of your shelves into cubbies, making it easier to keep individual sizes of sheets clearly separate helping to keep everything neater and tidier.

#14. Place those Items Most Used at Eye Level

Place those linens you use the most at eye levels and those used less often such as extra blankets or duvet covers either at the top or bottom of your linen closet.

#15. Label Everything

Place labels on each cubby or shelf so you know exactly where everything goes at a glance. This makes it extremely easy to find what you need when you need it.

Hall Closet Organization Tips

If you have ever opened your hall closet door and had some of the contents fall out onto the floor, or find yourself faced with a tangled pile of shoes, you know how important organizing that hall closet can be.

Here are a few organizational hacks that will get your hall closet neat and functional in no time at all.

#16. Keep Only those Items You Really Use

If you have coats and jackets you never wear, a single glove or mitten that has been laying around hoping the other glove will show up, just get rid of those space cluttering articles that are really serving no useful purpose.

The same goes for that pair of sneakers you can’t bear to throw away because you may wear them for yard work one day

#17. Exchange that Closet Rod and Hangers for Sturdy Hooks

Everyone is more likely to hang those coats and jackets up on a hook rather than a hanger.

Moreover, placing sturdy hooks at the back and the sides of your hall closet actually makes more space and leaves your entire closet looking neater.

#18. Use a Shoe Organizer on the Inside of Your Closet Door to Hold Accessories

A shoe organizer has several pockets in which you can store those winter hats, gloves, scarves and other accessories.

This will keep everything neat and tidy and the clear pockets make seeing the items simple and easy so you can just grab and go.

#19. Make Use of That Floor Space with Containers with Drawers

By using hooks to hang those coats and jackets you will likely have more floor space you can use.

If you hang those long coats on the hooks at the side of your hall closet, you can place a plastic container with drawers in the center of the closet where you place wrapping paper, gifts bags, ribbon, and other items to store.

#20. Shelf Dividers for More Storage

You can use your closet shelf to store other items you want to hide away by placing shelf dividers on your closet shelf.

These storage spaces can hold deflated swim rings, small coolers, picnic baskets and other items that you want to hide away.

In the alternative, if your closet shelf is wide enough you can also store your suitcases there as well.

Broom Closet Organization

Broom closets are normally tiny built-in closets that are usually located in your kitchen made just large enough to hide your broom, dustpan, mop and mop buckets and perhaps a small vacuum in to keep them out of sight.

However, you can maximize the space in your broom closet by being a bit creative.

#21. Over the Door Adjustable Hanger with Baskets

You can purchase an over the door adjustable hanger with baskets to hang on the inside of your broom closet door and use it to store bottles and cans of cleaning supplies as well as sponges, extra paper towels and those microfiber cloths and gloves.

This allows you more space in other places in your home to store other needed items.
