The Best Sheer Curtain Colors to Transform Your Space

It’s important to choose the color of your window treatments wisely because it can influence the look and feel of your home. Today, we are looking at the best sheer curtain colors and their functions.

One of my childhood fantasies was having a four-poster bed with billowing white curtains that would enclose me in a secret space yet allow glimpses of the beautiful princess within (me, naturally).

White voile curtains, which figure so prominently in romantic images, have a delicate charm but are only one shade of sheer. What other colors are available, and which sheer curtain colors are the best?

The best sheer curtain colors are classic white curtains of voile, chiffon, polyester, net, or lace. They are inexpensive, charming, and practical, diffusing light and offering privacy. Choose colorful pastel sheers for added interest. Keep your sheers pristine by washing them as per the care label.

Apart from the princess fantasy, I had a childhood dream of elegant drapes with practical white sheers at the window of my cottage. (Yes, I was an imaginative child.)

My mother, ever sensible, felt that one set of curtains was adequate, thank you very much. What mom didn’t know was that sheer curtains have aesthetic and practical uses.

What Color Sheer Curtain Should I Get?

Although white is the most popular sheer color, there are several other colors of sheers to choose from. It all depends on the mood you are looking to create as well as the color scheme of your home. Let’s look at some of the top sheer colors available!

Classic Sheers: White and Off White Options

The original and classic sheers are white and made from thin or loosely woven textiles like voile, chiffon, polyester, net, or lace.

The newest trends in sheers are patterning, embroidery, and a subtle shimmer. High-end bespoke and handcrafted sheers are the ultimate in luxury.

Another trend is earthy stripes, working beautifully with coastal vibes.

Sheer and airy window treatments are versatile and useful because they are semi-translucent and lightweight.

For example, they let in plenty of light but provide some privacy at the same time, particularly for a bedroom.

Choose slightly heavier sheers if you want more privacy.

Sheers filter and diffuse bright and intense sunshine, adding elegance and charm to any room and allowing you to work without being blinded.

Because sheers are so light, you can hang them from the ceiling, cascading to the floor where they puddle, to create the illusion of height.

They can hang alone or layered with other window treatments in swags, tiebacks, or scarves and look charming with drapes, curtains, or blinds.

Sheers look lovely with many interior aesthetics, always making a style statement, whether your vibe is minimalist, Boho, or romantic.

Sheer curtains aren’t just handy for window treatments, though. Use them as I imagined, as a canopy for your four-poster bed.

While white curtains are delightful, off-white sheer linen is an utter indulgence and far more sophisticated than my princess dream.

You can also use sheers to create a room partition or a dressing area in an open-plan space. This look is ideal for lofts or barn conversions, separating areas without losing the vastness of the space.

Colored Sheers: Adding a Hint of Hue

Brown sheer curtains.

Although white sheers will always be timeless, colorful sheers add zest and interest to your interiors.

You can find voile curtains in green, pink, brown, yellow, orange, and red, although pastel shades are most common. As in all interiors of the moment, the latest color trend is muted green. Eclectic opulence calls for pink sheers and colorful window treatments layered together.

You can extend your bed of king’s fantasy by adding colorful sheers to your canopy: gold is the pinnacle of princess charm!

Colored sheers are ideal when the room is already grandly designed and opulent. A heavy window treatment can be overwhelming, so choose an elegant sheer olive green with a decorative tieback.

Create a matching window treatment by coordinating your sheers with your curtains. With the movement to warm, earthy colors, you’ll see plenty of orange sheers, especially with hand embroidery.

Layering colorful sheers creates a unique textural look, especially when combined with elegant swags. Sheers prevent swags from looking overly heavy.

Choose colorful embroidered sheers for utter opulence—this look is best for traditional interiors.

Caring for Sheer Curtains

Keeping your sheer curtains in pristine condition is crucial, as limp and dingy sheers look cheap very quickly, ruining that romantic billowing curtain image.

Before washing the curtains, check the care label. You may need to dry clean or hand wash your sheers rather than slinging them into the machine. Incorrect curtain care can lead to colors fading, fabric shrinking, or the finish pilling.

Machine Washing Sheers

Unlined curtains and sheers made from cotton, nylon, or polyester can generally be machine-washed. If your curtains can be machine-washed, here’s what to do:

  1. Remove all hooks, rings, clips, and pins from the curtains.
  2. Check whether your curtains are colorfast by spot-testing a small hem corner with water and a little liquid laundry detergent. Dab the spot with a paper towel—if color is transferred, the curtains are not colorfast and must be washed separately in cold water.
  3. Place them in a mesh bag or pillowcase to avoid fraying and damage.
  4. Add a little laundry detergent and choose the delicate, gentle, or cold-water cycle.

Handwashing Sheers

If your sheers are handwash only, for example, silk or lace, then follow these steps:

  1. Remove all hardware and check for colorfastness as above.
  2. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a few drops of liquid laundry detergent.
  3. Submerge the curtain in the water, swishing to loosen dirt.
  4. Rinse the curtains in lukewarm to cool water until all suds are gone.
  5. Gently squeeze out excess water, but do not wring.
  6. Lay the curtain on a thick towel. Roll it up in the towel to squeeze out excess water.

Drying Sheers

  1. Try not to dry sheers in the dryer, as they can end up wrinkled and shrunk. Instead, hang them outside or over a drying rack.
  2. Take down the sheers just before they are dry.
  3. Iron over a towel to protect the delicate fabric if the sheers can be ironed.

Replace the hardware and rehang the sheers.

Final Thoughts

Sheer curtains are beautiful year-round choice of curtains for rooms that don’t need complete darkness or privacy. They create the illusion of height and enclose beds or open plan spaces. Choose classic white sheers, colorful voile, shimmery, floral, or lace curtains to add charm and interest to your interiors.
