Holidays bring lots of joy and a lot of stuff! Holiday decorations, family heirlooms, seasonal dish sets, and new gifts, so many things to store away. Throughout the years, I’ve discovered a lot of creative holiday storage solutions, some you may have never heard of!

Today, I’ll walk you through some of my favorite creative ways to store your holiday decorations as well as other holiday/seasonal items. Holiday clutter doesn’t have to overwhelm your home and be a mess every time you open it up; it just needs a few smart tweaks.
Why Holiday Storage Feels So Overwhelming
Holiday items can be big and bulky. Consider the size and shape of Christmas trees, wreaths, and yard decorations, just to name a few. Many of the items are fragile on top of that.
Additionally, we only use these things once a year, so they oftentimes get shoved deep back into the crevices of the attic, garage, shed, or just in the back of the closets or under the bed.
Not everyone has a dedicated storage room, and finding places to properly store Christmas items can feel overwhelming. Utilizing creative storage solutions for your holiday items makes it possible to store everything beautifully and easily, even in small homes. You don’t need more space, you just need your space to work harder.
Two of my best suggestions for creating simplicity amidst the overwhelm of the holiday season are to declutter prior to the holidays, and then use these tips when storing your Christmas decorations.
Creative Holiday Storage Solutions You’ve Probably Never Tried
These storage solutions come in very handy if you have a small space and no dedicated storage place for your holiday items. Even if you do, utilizing some of these will make packing and unpacking simpler.
Using a Hanging Garment Bag for Wrapping Papers
A hanging garmet bag keeps all the rolls from unrolling, everything in one place, is relatively flat, and is easy to tuck away in the closet. This is an idea you can use year-round and keep tucked into the closet to pull out for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.
Sometimes the best storage solutions are already hidden right in your closet.
Use Shoe Storage for Ornaments
Hanging shoe storage provides clear, separate homes for each ornament. It is perfect even for semi-fragile items, as it provides a bit of protection for each item. If an ornament is extra fragile, you can first wrap it in bubble wrap or tissue paper prior to placing it within the shoe space.
From this point, you can either hang the shoe storage in the back of the closet until next year, or gently fold it up and place it into a holiday colored tote for next year. This saves a lot of money when compared to expensive ornament storage boxes.

Store Holiday Linens in Vacuum Sealed Bags
This is one of the best space-saving storage solutions to use year after year. Between cloth napkins, placemats, stockings, Christmas hats, holiday blankets, and Christmas stuffed animals, there can be a lot of fabric items that make their appearance only during the holidays.
Space bags or other brands of vacuum sealed bags can be purchased at Amazon or your nearest big box store. Once items are vacuumed flat in the bag, you can stack them wherever they fit for easy storage.

Make Your Under-Bed Storage Space Work Harder
Consider using space under your bed to store your holiday items. Every bed in the house can be used for this, including the kids’ rooms and the guest bedroom if you have one.
Many modern box springs can even be easily opened up for additional hidden storage space. If you have an open space beneath the beds, use flat under-bed storage boxes for smaller holiday items like ornaments or the Christmas village, or slide your vacuum-sealed bags right under the bed.
Use a Coat hanger so Your Christmas Lights Don’t Tangle
Storing Christmas lights in a way that prevents tangling creates a much more peaceful atmosphere when you are doing the holiday decorating next year. One simple solution that you may not have heard of before is wrapping Christmas lights around a coat hanger to prevent tangling.
Yet another simple holiday storage solution sitting right within your closet.
You can just as easily wrap the lights around a sturdy piece of cardboard rolled up, or by a wrapping paper tube cut to size.
Use Cord Clips/Bread Clips for Labeling Light Strands
If you have certain lights that fit perfectly in certain areas of the house, labeling them will help to make decorating next year much simpler.
Cord clips or simple bread clips work perfectly for this. A tiny label today saves you a big headache next year.
Protect Wreaths By Hanging Them
While wreath storage bags are an ideal solution, not all of us have the space for that, nor can we all afford a dedicated bag for the wreath. To save some money or space, consider wrapping up your wreath in a durable trash bag and hanging it up in the garage or back of the closet (even up high above an unused shelf if there is space).
Use Egg Cartons for Small Fragile Items
Egg cartons are made to house small, fragile items, so they repurpose perfectly for small holiday items as well. Glass ornaments, Christmas village people, and other small glass items can be housed safely in egg cartons. They also stack for simple storage and easily fit within bigger totes as well.
Use Trash Bags for the Tree
If you don’t have a dedicated box or bag for your artificial Christmas tree, wrap each piece of the tree in a durable trash bag, squeeze all the air out, and tie the branches down with a string.
From there, if you place all the tree pieces into a large yard trash bag together and repeat the process, it is very easy to tuck into the back of the closet or up into the rafters of the garage, or any other narrow, tall space you can find.
A Few More Creative Holiday Storage Ideas:
- Behind the door organizers hiding in closets
- In the rafters of the garage on a piece of plywood
- In a bench storage furniture piece
- Try padding fragile decor or holiday plates and serving platters with holiday linens. There’s no reason to buy more things to pad your fragile items with when you have many soft items to store away as well.
- Keep holiday baking dishes in the broiler
It’s amazing how much calm you can create when everything has a clear, intentional home. Using these holiday storage solutions and these additional Christmas decor organization tips will create a more peaceful holiday season for you year after year.
